Water Colors: Chicago Afrobeat Project

Check out Lake Stage in Polk Bros Park for a free concert featuring Chicago Afrobeat Project, part of Water Colors presented by CIBC, a live jazz music series co-curated with the Jazz Institute of Chicago.

Chicago Afrobeat Project performs a homage to the Lagos music scene that developed the afrobeat sound in the 1970s when African musicians began combining elements of West African musical styles such as jùjú music and highlife with American funk and jazz influences, with a focus on chanted vocals, complex intersecting rhythms, and percussion. The term afrobeat was coined by Nigerian multi-instrumentalist and bandleader Fela Kuti, who is responsible for pioneering and popularizing the style both within and outside Nigeria.

Water Colors presented by CIBC highlights some of the top local jazz talent today, featuring young aspiring jazz artists to established performers, the series showcases a variety of jazz musical styles.
